I returned to London a couple of weeks ago, after spending two wonderful weeks in Hong Kong. I was born and brought up in Hong Kong in the 1950s and the city will forever be my “home”, although I live in the United Kingdom.

I had to use crutches during my visit, as I await a major surgery on my ankle due to severe osteoarthritis. What amazed me was the courtesy and kindness shown to me during my stay from members of the public in Hong Kong. Many Hongkongers went out of their way to help me, whether it was descending stairs at MTR stations, crossing the harbour by the Star Ferry or getting into and out of buses and taxis. This was extreme courtesy I have never encountered in any other city in the world. Was this because I can speak some Cantonese or because I have silver hair? I don’t know, but I’m just very grateful.

I want to congratulate the MTR for providing considerably more toilet facilities, all spotlessly clean, at MTR stations. The cleanliness of the public toilets at the railway station in Hung Hom was outstanding.

Our brothers and sisters on the mainland may need to be better informed about politeness and common courtesy when visiting Hong Kong. I was made very aware of the frustrations felt by Hong Kong residents concerning what they perceive to be ignorance and lack of sophistication. Surely thought could be given to informing visitors from the mainland about simple things like waiting for people to get out of MTR trains before pushing to get inside? These shortcomings didn’t bother me, but I know how much it concerns and irritates my Hong Kong-based friends.

So, a big “well done” to the people of Hong Kong. You made my recent visit very memorable and happy.
