I am writing in response to the article “Hong Kong’s Sarah Lee Wai-sze clinches double at cycling worlds” (March 4). Hong Kong’s Olympic medal winner won her first Cycling World Championship gold in the keirin event and gold in sprint race.
In recent years, Hong Kong has experienced a series of challenges, the most remarkable being the “umbrella movement” in 2014 which resulted in a polarised society riven by political conflict. Today, every stakeholder demands more support for their own stance. Hence, Hong Kong is noticeably less united and more socially unstable.
However, Lee’s achievement shows that sport can serve as a unifying force that breaks down borders. The comments on media reports on Lee’s triumph are all positive, celebrating Hong Kong’s glory or praising Lee’s hard work. Everyone is proud of our home-grown track cyclist.

Besides, Lee went through the lowest point in her career around three years ago and she was able to overcome these difficulties and get back on track. This reflects the Hong Kong spirit – we are tough, we will never give up.

Hong Kong is where we are born, live and grow up. It is our home. If our home seems to be losing its core values, we should identify the cause of the problem and find a way to tackle it.
