Letters

I am writing to respond to the persistent negative media coverage of US President Donald Trump.

After Trump won the presidential election in 2016, the media, Democrats and liberals became obsessed with investigating his links to Russia, their only way to impeach him. In the past two years, despite the media frenzy around Russia, special counsel Robert Mueller has not been able to prove links between Trump's campaign team and Russia.

Trump spent Christmas in the White House, as negotiations with Democrats dragged on for US$5 billion to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Both sides refused to give in, resulting in a 35-day partial government shutdown. Around the 20th day, Trump said it was easier to negotiate with China than the Democratic Party.

For Trump, the border wall represents the dignity of the US as a sovereign state, law and order, and a campaign promise to live up to. From the day of the election to today, Trump has remained steadfast in his commitment to this project. If his predecessors had insisted on the strict enforcement of immigration laws, there wouldn’t be over 20 million people residing illegally in the US.

The Washington establishment prefers to see the US fail than Trump succeed. All his words and actions are suspected, magnified and criticised.
