In the wake of the two crashes of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft (“Families of Lion Air crash victims ask why Boeing 737 MAX not grounded”, March 15), I fully support US President Donald Trump saying that planes are getting too complicated and we need to go back to the basics.

Safety comes first, and if artificial intelligence and new technological advances come at the cost of more crashes and lives being lost, I would rather airlines buy into the success of the past, with a proven track record of flights without crashes. Under no circumstance would I want my loved ones flying a plane that cannot easily be controlled by a pilot and which works on auto mode for sophisticated functions.

I trust a pilot to land a plane over a machine.
