At the outset, I wish to declare that I am an ordinary person in Hong Kong and do not wish to project any bias towards any of the local alliances, whether pro-establishment or pro-democratic.

I still remember the night I watched the video in which Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor described her passion for Hong Kong and stated her rationale for insisting on amending Hong Kong’s extradition laws.

I believe that Mrs Lam truly loves Hong Kong and really wants to do something for her birthplace. She believes in doing the right thing, at great personal sacrifice. She cried real tears. This was a remarkable moment of emotion from such a strong woman.

I completely felt her pain as a mother, after she received threatening phone calls and told her two sons not to come back during the summer holiday. The maternal instinct is to protect family members: safety takes priority over a family reunion. Mrs Lam’s is absolutely the voice of maternal love. Even more touching was when she shared her exchange with her politically lukewarm husband, after she was accused of selling out Hong Kong. As her husband told her, her problem was “you have sold yourself to Hong Kong”. As wife, mother and chief executive, she has a heavy burden to carry every day.

At the press conference on June 15, it was heartening to see Mrs Lam standing calmly to explain to the press her reasons for having backed the extradition bill. Humanity, harmony and inclusion are what we as mothers and parents were pleased to see and hear from her. Mrs Lam and her team are worthy of my support.
