Regarding the recent happenings related to the extradition bill, I would like to express my views as follows.

I hope that our Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor is sincere in her apology and intention to learn from this episode. After all, it was only a few months ago that she said, after attending a World Economic Forum in Davos, that there were two things to remember as advised by an unnamed foreign leader there: first, to be humble, and second, to shed the mindset of elitism.

Had she put that reminder into practice, she would have consulted all stakeholders before trying to bulldoze past opposition. Although we need a strong leader who should be tough, she should also be warm instead of cold.

Opposition leaders who profess to be Christian and some prominent religious leaders have joined the chorus calling for the chief executive to completely withdraw the bill, as reported in “Top religious leaders blast government over extradition crisis” (June 19). I would like to remind them that, whatever you do, please bear in mind the verses in the Bible regarding submission to authority in 1 Peter 2:13-14 (English Standard Version): “Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.”
