Your editorial “Show of leadership needed, starting with the chief executive” (July 30) was very timely.
The Hong Kong community is no doubt extremely disappointed that the excellent advice in the column by the former Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang published a few weeks ago in your newspaper (“A commission of inquiry into police conduct can help Hong Kong’s healing process”, July 9) has been ignored by the government.
His advice that the extradition bill should be withdrawn and an independent inquiry held has been supported by responsible community leaders and sensible people from all around the world.

Hongkongers deserve an explanation from the government as to why such sensible, reasonable and objective advice from one of the most prominent and trusted leaders in our community has been simply ignored.

The government is not doing enough to protect public interests. Hongkongers are justifiably upset by the events over the past month. It is not too difficult to provoke discord and social disorder but far more difficult to restore and maintain social harmony. Nevertheless, government cannot evade this responsibility.

It may be necessary in the future to try to find out what is wrong with our present system of government and how it can be improved upon.
