Boris Johnson is not a smart survivor (“Seven steps Boris Johnson must take to secure a brilliant future for the Conservative Party”, August 8). He is a serial liar, a bully and definitely not to be trusted. He is symptomatic of all that is wrong with Western “democratic” politics. He has essentially cheated his way into a position where he can inflict tremendous harm and he was definitely not elected by the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

If he gets his way, the UK will no longer exist nor will the National Health Service. The sooner he is removed from office and replaced by someone who cares about the majority of the people, not the wealthy elite, the more chance there is of restoring humanity, dignity, fairness and hope to the British people wherever they might be. I am British and still proud of being so.

British foreign secretary should heed protests at home

It is at the very least hypocritical of the British foreign secretary Dominic Raab to call for China to “respect peaceful protests” in Hong Kong, when the British government itself ignores its own peaceful protests, like the recent march of 1 million people asking for a second referendum on Brexit.
