It is encouraging to note the support from the members of the British parliament for the people of Hong Kong. The right to demonstrate in the territory is guaranteed in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984. In view of the apparent excessive use of force by the Hong Kong police, possibly in contravention of that right, might it not behove Her Majesty’s government to recommend an independent inquiry as demanded by the protesters?

The relevant commission might be formed from among permanent and non-permanent judges of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, to be appointed jointly by the United Kingdom and Hong Kong governments.

Li Ka-shing’s latest appeal only adds to protest farce

Street protests have a long, interesting history. Hong Kong’s current riotous campaign led by politically naive youngsters has achieved nothing despite their masked cowardly attacks on the police.

The children, also masked, link hands with their friends and play a street version of Ring a Ring o' Roses – such fun, anything is better than class.
