Contrary to the views of most of my friends, I have found myself in agreement with all of US President Donald Trump’s major policies and initiatives which include, inter alia, the reduction of the US physical presence in the Middle East. However, I am appalled at the intervention of Vice-President Mike Pence, and other senior US officials, in the internal political affairs of China by supporting the protesters in Hong Kong.
The subsequent proposal of the US Senate to ban the sale of munitions equipment, including tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets, to Hong Kong authorities is hypocritical (“US Senate bill calls for ending sale of tear gas and batons to Hong Kong”, October 25). These products are not used to prevent legal peaceful demonstrations but are only used by the police to protect buildings and people from the violence committed by an extreme group of anarchistic demonstrators.
The US must not interfere in the internal political affairs of Hong Kong. Thankfully, there are other sources of these products to aid the restoration and maintenance of law and order in Hong Kong.
