Despite the crisis that has engulfed Hong Kong over the past months, our city is still so beautiful. Getting away from the usual metropolitan life and recent chaos, I spent a few weekends enjoying the unbelievable greenery in our city, which reminded me that about 70 per cent of Hong Kong is still covered by unspoilt countryside and mountains.
There is no green without yellow and blue. Van Gogh’s paintings are so beautiful because of his skilful use of both yellow and blue. The colours in his paintings complement each other, like they are having a constructive dialogue. Any painter would know that one can easily spoil a painting by adding too much red, which could turn the artwork black.
Each of us Hongkongers is a little pigment which contributes to the overall picture of our city. The escalating crisis, which has even resulted in blood being spilled, will only lead our city into complete darkness.

We have all tried to “win” the arguments that have flared up over the past few months. Instead of having a dialogue, we have been aggressive and hostile to people with different opinions. But life is rather like an abstract painting and there is definitely more than one way to paint it.

We have forgotten that the uniqueness of Hong Kong is a combination of different sets of life experiences, just as I forgot that Hong Kong is covered by so much beautiful greenery. We grow and evolve by gaining new insights and taking on varied opinions and perspectives.
