Letters | Why Hong Kong domestic helpers may enjoy going to school on Sundays

I am an expat from England who has lived in Hong Kong for over a decade. When I first arrived, I was fascinated by the work and coexistence of “domestic helpers” and families in Hong Kong. Given the long working hours for adults and extensive tasks students are expected to complete for school, domestic helpers must be given much of the credit for helping some families function.
On duty six days a week, domestic helpers also have long working hours, so on their only day off they deserve to relax and socialise with their friends as they wish.
It pains me to see many of them gathered in cramped spaces outdoors, on footbridges, parks, paths and any area not occupied by the general public.

This is all year round, under the scorching heat of summer and in the unforgiving winter. At times, the attitude of the general public, with stares directed towards domestic helpers, is not friendly, to say the least.
Since there are domestic helpers throughout Hong Kong and there are also schools in all districts, I propose that schools be open for domestic helpers as a safe, warm and friendly environment on Sundays.
