Letters | Coronavirus pandemic: China and Chinese did nothing wrong

Dear Wuhaners and Chinese in general, Covid-19 is not your fault. You did nothing wrong. What is wrong is for the United States to use a false pretext to bomb Iraq in the 1990s, or the wider Middle East for the matter (“Pompeo begins using ‘Wuhan virus’ name as illness spreads in US”, March 7).
Nobody wants to be sick. I do not even want to catch the common cold. Out of fear, people become irrational and blame you. It is human nature. Even the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention became irrational when it did not want the 14 patients from Diamond Princess cruise back on US soil.
Many years ago, during the Aids outbreak in the US, fear and discrimination was also pervasive. The country educated the public not to discriminate against Aids patients. Today, they have forgotten that episode.

We are now seeing Covid-19 outbreaks around the globe. Wuhan and China had no advance notice when confronted with the virus. The rest of the world had time to prepare, and yet did not manage to contain the spread of the virus.

Therefore, people of China, do not not blame yourselves. Understand people’s fear, but at the same time be strong, both emotionally and physically. Do not let people see your tears. The more you cry, the more people will bully you.
