Since the protests started, you have published a number of letters centred on the theme of the government not listening to the people. I refer to the one on May 25, titled “Hong Kong government must not forget who it serves”, written by Matthew Fung of Quarry Bay.
May I be permitted to say that the Hong Kong government does listen, since I am sure that none of its members is deaf. They hear, but do not necessarily act, which is their prerogative, especially when what they hear are demands, often backed up by cowardly violent and destructive acts.

In a democracy, which many of the supporters of violent protests profess to want, violence and destruction should have no place; nor should it be the norm that demands are made, rather than considered suggestions open to rational discussion.

The situation has now got to a point where the Chinese government, having lost patience with people who are threatening national security, are being forced to enact a law which is not to everybody’s liking, but is necessary for Hong Kong to function again in peace, with a vibrant economy.

Security laws are common to most countries. Where are you allowed to desecrate the national flag and get away with it? Where are you allowed to advocate independence while trashing the streets?
