The Hong Kong government has, effective from October 1, designated the UK as a high-risk country whereby air travellers returning home, besides providing a negative Covid-19 test report, are then tested again on arrival, and then have to be quarantined in a hotel. There is no provision of home quarantine – an additional cost for all these travellers to bear for the 14-day hotel stay (“Hong Kong to add Britain to high-risk Covid-19 list next week”, September 24).
The UK on October 2 had 6,968 new infections: another European country, next-door France, reported 12,148 new infections on the same day. The population base for both France and the UK is about 66 million, that means the rate of infection in France is twice that of the UK. So why isn’t France included in this list of high-risk countries?
Why target the UK other than the decision being politically driven? Hong Kong would not have had a third wave if this government had not allowed close to 200,000 seamen, aircrew and selected others to enter the city without checking and tracking. And now the citizens are continuing to pay the price for this negligence.
