Letters | No clear reason Hong Kong’s beaches should remain closed
Reading Time:1 minute
Why you can trust SCMP

The Hong Kong government has received great support for its decision to open many indoor sports facilities, including pools, and for allowing the return of team sports. Accordingly, would the Leisure and Cultural Services Department or Food and Environmental Hygiene Department please explain to the public, via these pages, the rationale for the continued beach closures?
These closures continue, almost as if forgotten, despite the relaxation of other social activities around the city (“Hong Kong swimming pools can be open, but not the beaches?”, September 23).
With the summer influx of beachgoers unlikely and the benefits to health and well-being from the use of the outdoors and large open spaces being well understood, we’d all like to know why.

Not one person seems to know the reasons for continued beach closures versus allowing many other activities which take place in much tighter confines.
We welcome a clear and reasonable explanation, which would help build trust within the efforts for better citywide health.
