I am writing in response to “Like we’ve lost a home’: Cathay Dragon employees surprised, shaken by decision to axe Hong Kong airline” (October 21).
It is hard to believe that a 35-year-old Hong Kong brand, Cathay Dragon, was shut down dramatically overnight. Starting off as Dragonair with a single flight in 1985, the airline managed to draw business in Asia away from the much larger Cathay Pacific, until the latter finally bought it over and more recently rebranded it.
The closure of the airline is heartbreaking news for the city. My thoughts go out to the thousands of Cathay Dragon employees who have lost their jobs. Due to the management’s sudden decision, frontline staff were not even able to say goodbye to their beloved “family members” or enjoy a last flight. It is a pity they were forced to bid farewell to their workplace and colleagues so abruptly.

No one in Hong Kong would have expected the budget carrier to be axed completely. I hope the spirit of Cathay Dragon will continue to live on, even if the airline is no more.
