I am writing to express my opinion on “Study and work on the mainland, Xi urges Hong Kong youth” (October 15).

President Xi Jinping made an appeal for young Hongkongers to experience life across the border to “bring their hearts closer to the motherland” in a speech hailing Shenzhen as a model city. He has also urged more Hongkongers to work, study and live on the mainland.

In my opinion, it is beneficial to work on the mainland for several reasons. For starters, the mainland can provide many diverse opportunities for Hong Kong’s youngsters. As we all know, the economy of China has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years, especially in major cities such as Shenzhen and Beijing.

These global cities are seeking talented graduates from Hong Kong who are competent and competitive.

Also, given the unique status of Hong Kong, young people from the city are likely to be much sought after by international companies. This should greatly improve the employment prospects of Hong Kong graduates who can, at the same time, enjoy the high salaries paid by mainland companies as well, while living costs there are substantially lower.
