Letters | How revamped Hong Kong story in history museum will showcase the city’s diversity

I would like to share a glimpse of the segment of the revamping of the exhibitions at the Hong Kong Museum of History in which I am involved.
I was most delighted when I was informed by the museum three years ago that approval had been secured to proceed with the inclusion of a rotating thematic gallery to showcase the histories of the foreign communities settled in the city and that we, the Portuguese community, had been invited to be the vanguard.
The immediate significance of this is the revival of collective memory and introduction to those who do not know of the histories of the foreign communities here. Different peoples came to Hong Kong to seek opportunities, made their home here and contributed to the city. They helped to create the rich and colourful mosaic that makes up Hong Kong society.
We, the Portuguese of Macau, were one of the first. In the narrations of our history at the exhibition, we build in at every turn the emphasis that Hong Kong is our home and how historical events continue to have relevance at the present time.
