I refer to your report “Overseas residents: why can’t we vote?” (October 22). I agree that if Hong Kong residents on the mainland are going to be allowed to vote in next year’s Legislative Council elections, Hongkongers living overseas should be given the same option as well. By virtue of being Hongkongers, they, too, have the right to have a say in who governs their city.

While some residents may have gone abroad, they are still Hongkongers who enjoy the rights and responsibilities tied to that identity. Moreover, it would be unfair to deny overseas residents the right to vote in city elections and only extend it to Hongkongers living on the mainland.

I think Hongkongers overseas and on the mainland should get equal treatment simply because both groups are Hong Kong residents. I see no reason why only those on the mainland should benefit from the proposed arrangement. Give Hong Kong residents overseas a chance to vote for their favourite candidate too.

In response to “Overseas residents: why can’t we vote?” (October 22), I believe Hong Kong residents overseas should have the right to vote in city elections.
