Along with the increasing popularity of vegetarianism in society, plant-based meat is the latest trend in the food industry. Such alternative options for beef and pork are now available at the supermarket chains in Hong Kong, showing the trend is catching on in the city as well.
Even so, the price of plant-based meat is expensive and will remain unaffordable for many of us. I hope that the production technology of plant-based meat will improve in the future so the price will fall to a level more affordable for the general public.
Making plant-based meat more affordable is important because it is not only healthier but can also help tackle climate change. The process of raising cattle releases large amounts of methane and other greenhouse gases, so eating meat such as beef will increase our carbon footprint as well as enhance the greenhouse effect.

If more of use choose plant-based alternatives instead, the production of meats such as beef will decrease from a lack of demand. I believe developing the plant-based meat industry could be a vital way to promote environmental sustainability.
