Despite being defeated in a free and fair election, US President Donald Trump is engaging in reckless acts of political brinkmanship. He has fired his secretary of defence, Mark Esper, the latest bizarre dismissal of a cabinet minister by this administration. Trump’s unhinged brand of fascism includes belief in violence, lack of faith in legal processes and rabid nationalism.

High drama is expected in the next 60 days. Political brinkmanship in such a volatile environment is reckless and could trigger a civil war that will be difficult to contain. Trump is taking dangerous risks to impose his will on the United States.

The errors, lack of comprehension and arrogance of his leadership have been startling. His toxic mix of defiance and ignorance poses a threat to his country and the world, and his behaviour promises to be a nightmare in the days to come.

During his presidency, Trump has created a culture of fear, a hatred of dissent and an utter disdain for the truth. He has attempted to build power through aggressive attacks on the media, critics and the judiciary, with his rhetoric and outlandish policies pointing to a terrifying future for American politics and governance.

During the final days of the Watergate crisis, US secretary of defence James Schlesinger and secretary of state Henry Kissinger warned the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff not to accept military orders from an unbalanced president Richard Nixon, without checking with them first. Today, the US stands at the precipice of a similar situation.

Trump’s bizarre behaviour is a dangerous gamble. His political sabre-rattling is the act of a leader who has lost touch with reality, and has exposed America’s political fault lines. However, Trump’s coercive strategy is sure to backfire – with grim consequences. Nobody will be fooled by a brilliant bluff.
