Letters | Why launching a Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble is irresponsible

Why you can trust SCMP

I am writing in response to the article “Hong Kong, Singapore travel bubble to launch on November 22, with passenger quota initially set at 200 per day in each direction”. I could not disagree more with this impulsive and irresponsible move on the part of the Hong Kong government.
At this point, we just want this catastrophe to be over and to return to normalcy. However, we must be rational. Given that we keep racking up cases every day, I understand that many of us are spiralling into boredom and even depression.
Lately, many voices are being raised in favour of the relaxation of strict control measures. These requests stem from desperation, so I sympathise with those making them. However, I am furious that the government, of all the many actions it could have taken, decided to launch a travel bubble.

We must accept that, considering Covid-19 cases are increasing in several countries, Hong Kong is not going to be out of danger for quite a while. We should all be patient and continue to wear a mask, wash our hands and, most importantly, not travel.
The situation in Singapore has calmed down a bit, but there is no guarantee that a traveller from Singapore will not spread the virus in Hong Kong. Moreover, Hong Kong is not completely free of Covid-19 either. We do not want to worsen the situation in other places.
There are just too many lives at stake. Yes, the economy is important, but money is just useless paper if no one is alive to use it.
