Letters
With tens of thousands of Hongkongers’ businesses on the verge of collapse, and hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Hongkongers desperately worried about losing their jobs, putting food on the table for their families, and protecting the health of their loved ones, the best some Legislative Council members can manage is to have a nap, order hairy crabs online or play with their phones during the chief executive’s policy address.
When these members are in Legco, they are on the taxpayers’ clock – if they want to sleep, shop or play, they can do it on their own time, not on ours. If they are not going to pay attention, then they should go and do something else to justify their bloated salaries, such as finding out who is responsible for the negligence that caused the death of eight people in a fire in Jordan.

I wrote to one of those whose disgraceful behaviour was caught by the cameras in Legco – the person in question, who is an Executive Councillor and so in receipt of two outrageous salaries, has not even bothered to apologise.

One thing we can all agree with the chief executive on is that we desperately need to rebuild trust between the people and the government. Insulting and treating with contempt the people you are supposed to represent and whose taxes pay for your salaries seems a very funny way of going about it.

This behaviour is utterly shameful and there is no excuse at all for it. Shame on them.
