I am writing in response to the article “To reduce obesity, more weight is being put on sport in China’s high-school entrance exam” (November 20).
Although it was shocking to learn that a 2017 study found China had the world’s largest population of obese children, I don’t think sport being made a subject in high-school entrance exams would really serve to reduce obesity.

Reducing obesity requires one to exercise as well as have a balanced diet. Even if you do work hard at sport, the likelihood of you being obese is quite high if you overeat.

Moreover, even if sport features in exams, most students will not focus on it. I would guess that students will address the main subjects first and simply tick the box when it comes to sport.

Instead, I would suggest schools distribute an exercise record sheet and food pyramid sheet. Students could follow the food pyramid sheet to develop a balanced diet. When students do exercise, it can be recorded on the exercise record sheet. This would motivate students to exercise and eat healthy.
