Christmas is just a day away, and the carols and holiday melodies are everywhere. We often find ourselves unconsciously humming along: “We wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.” Christmas always brings good tidings, but in a “post-truth era” full of fake news, the world also has to contend with new fears.

The world is being battered badly by a pandemic, and we are tired of social distancing. We need words of wisdom from our leaders to guide us through these turbulent times. But, unfortunately, we aren’t receiving comfort and consolation from them.

Economically, Hong Kong is the freest city in the world; we are proud of living in a place which has long upheld the economic principle of “freedom of choice”. Ironically, however, we have been told we don’t have the right to choose which Covid-19 vaccine we would like to take. Our leader should not turn a matter of personal choice into a political issue (“Hong Kong residents should be allowed to choose Covid-19 vaccine, experts say”, December 23).

Can we live up to what makes Hong Kong so unique?

This Christmas brings us both hopes and fears. But this is also the season we always sing Joy to the World. Let peace of mind be with us in 2021 and beyond.
