Your readers will know that recently there have been an number of attacks in the British press and media by politicians and others, some personal, on lawyers from outside Hong Kong who continue to work in your courts (“Queen’s Counsel will not prosecute Jimmy Lai, others after criticism at home”, January 20).

Most recently, a personal attack on David Perry QC by the British foreign secretary is deeply troubling, and I write to say that I know this will worry all in Hong Kong who are proud of the ethics and integrity which underpin your legal system.
I write as a retired English solicitor/judge who had the privilege and honour to work in Hong Kong as a young lawyer in the mid-1960s.
What clearly matters is that the people of Hong Kong continue to receive the best possible service from those who serve in your courts, and I send this to emphasise that lawyers in Britain will do whatever we can to help, not hinder, the rule of law for you and elsewhere.
