Your correspondent Tom Yam opines, “those in the ruling class like Mr Chan do not seem to understand the impact that the national security law and the ensuing actions of the SAR government have had on many Hong Kong people” (“Hongkongers choosing the UK seek more than a good living”, February 17).

An example of what Hongkongers have lost since the introduction of the national security law would be appropriate. However, it is quite difficult to find, as the reality is that little has changed.

You can still criticise the government, you can still publicly call our chief executive ineffective, you can still protest peacefully if permission for your gathering has police approval – something also required under colonial rule.

Yes, you can no longer terrorise innocent citizens, kill them with bricks, set them aflame and destroy property simply because you feel your view is the only legitimate one.

Hong Kong is a city within China, we must strive to ensure it is the best city, taking full advantage of the economic opportunity our position in the Pearl River Delta offers, and allowing generations to earn decent salaries and their families to prosper.
