Letters | Neglect of Hong Kong cemetery lets monkeys, traffic run wild
- Allowing monkeys to roam free around the grounds and leaving dustbins to become a breeding ground for insects puts those trying to pay their respects at risk

I would like to call attention to the plight of the faithful paying tribute to their deceased loved ones because of the poor monitoring at St Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery in Cheung Sha Wan, leading to the multiplication of monkeys, flies and a traffic jam in the cemetery area.
Two years ago, I alerted the elders of the church and the supervisor of the cemetery to the serious problem of monkeys and flies. Every five feet, there are monkeys jumping or sitting on the top of the tombs with their eyes fixed on us as if they are ready to grab anything from us at any moment.
On April 18, we were forced to alight from our taxi before the entrance gate because lots of cars were parked along the cemetery’s private road. It was really terrible for us, suffering the pain of osteoarthritic knees.
The security guard at the entrance did nothing to help. Perhaps the elders of the church are too busy taking care of the souls of the living to pay much attention to the suffering of those who have their beloved buried at the cemetery.
