Letters | Why it’s time for Hong Kong to ditch Disney

  • Hong Kong Disneyland would be better off on Hainan island, with the space to build a proper-sized park to rival its Asian peers
  • Hong Kong could then use the land to build some much-needed housing, instead of taking over part of the Fanling golf course or country parks

I fully agree with your editorial in Monday’s edition, “Time for reflection for Hong Kong Disneyland” (June 7). In fact, I would encourage the government to take a step further by starting a dialogue with the Walt Disney Company and the central government in Beijing on the possibility of moving Hong Kong Disneyland to Hainan island.
Beijing has designated Hainan as one of China’s top entertainment and tourist hubs. There would be plenty of land available there to build a proper-sized park similar to the ones in Shanghai and Tokyo. Of course, the initial response from the government would be that there is an agreement. However, in business, anything is renegotiable.
Hong Kong can then use the land – the combined parcel of the existing park and the empty lot next to it – to build some much-needed housing, instead of talking about taking back part of the Fanling golf course and utilising the fringes of some country parks.

The infrastructure for Disneyland is already there. What remains is for the Hong Kong government to take action, not only to stop the bleeding but also help relieve part of the chronic housing problem.

Your correspondent Pages Ng is correct in asserting that country parks should be left well alone (“Country parks are no place for public housing”, May 20).
