The Hong Kong chief executive is said to have submitted a proposal to Beijing so that they would reopen the border soon. However, I believe that her wish may be turned down again because Guangdong province will not allow any leakage from Hong Kong (“Carrie Lam wants quarantine-free business travel, but ‘final decision with Beijing’”, July 14).
Over the past several weeks, Hong Kong has recorded very few cases of coronavirus disease, and those are mostly related to aircrew. This gives a clear indication that our inbound pandemic control is working extremely well. However, so long as local cases still exist, the mainland Chinese authorities will not give us the green light.
The Hong Kong leader is very kind and sympathetic to let students in the UK come back to the city in the summer. Has she considered the feelings of most citizens?

Most of us just want to be able to freely travel back to mainland China. The mainland and Hong Kong are separated only by the Shenzhen River, but only a minority can cross this distance now. Meanwhile, our fellow special administrative region, Macau, is taking the same approach as Guangdong province, their strategies for fighting the virus are uniform.
The Hong Kong government often emphasises that we are part of the Greater Bay Area, so why they don’t unify policy on this particular issue? Judging by the current environment, it is to be believed that most citizens will accept a policy change without argument.
