I refer to the letter from Jose Alvares, “Hit TV series shows Hong Kong ready to talk about gay rights, but gently does it” (July 22). Ossan’s Love, which finished its run on ViuTV two weeks ago, has been the talk of the town.
The huge impact of the drama comes as no surprise. Canto-pop boy band Mirror has had a meteoric rise to fame and two of its more popular members featured in this “boys’ love” drama.

Also, Hong Kong has just survived a prolonged period of social unrest and the long-lasting pandemic is leaving the city fatigued and depressed. Our city is ready for a change to something positive, and has greeted both Mirror and the show with open hearts.

This show is a skilful adaptation of a Japanese drama of the same name. The directors humanise the characters and develop their roles in a positive and romantic way. The local flavour is strong, too. It’s almost impossible not to be charmed by the good-looking actors, especially Anson Lo.

Whether or not you start out as an LGBT supporter, you are bound to enjoy the show. Some may even become more open-minded towards gay love. Such is the mesmerising power of popular culture!

In its hit song Warrior, Mirror promised to take Hong Kong “to a new age”. Is this show part and parcel of what it wants to deliver, l wonder?
