I am writing in response to the article, “Extreme weather, flooding puts climate change in focus” (July 27).

We have seen a series of natural disasters over the past few months. There was flooding in Germany, Belgium and China, a ferocious storm in India, heatwaves in the US and wildfires in Siberia, resulting in a tragic death toll and tremendous economic loss.

Experts believe that the intensity of these natural disasters is being exacerbated by climate change. People now have to face the dire threat of abnormal weather events.

One of the main reasons for the drastic climate change we have been witnessing in recent years is greenhouse gas emissions. The topic has always been on the table, discussed at numerous summits. Yet, humanity seems to be barely making any progress towards addressing the inexorable problem.

Nations seem to be too focused on their own interests to come together to find feasible solutions. Most countries prioritise economic development so they refuse to accept rules restricting carbon emissions, for instance.

However, we should remember that nothing is more valuable than our very survival. Hundreds of people have died because of extreme weather events in July. We had better seize every chance we have to alleviate the problem before the time bomb goes off.
