With regard to your poll question, “Old and lonely” (August 2), which notes that the pandemic has intensified social isolation among the elderly, the old and lonely need social interaction with others for their mental well- being. Isolating this group of people for their protection from Covid-19 is inhumane and will cause even more mental and physical problems.

Covid-19 vaccination is very important for this group of Hongkongers. Care homes for the elderly in Hong Kong should ensure that all their staff and doctors as well as the residents are vaccinated.

If the elderly are living at home with other family members, it is important that they as well as all the family members and helpers are vaccinated. As of now, Hong Kong can offer free vaccinations to many groups of people – including the elderly. Vaccination centres should also advertise the importance of the elderly getting vaccinated with posters and notices.

Many elderly are afraid of vaccination and, of course, like many other groups, should be careful and consult their doctors or health experts. However, ordinary and common problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, alone should not deter them from getting vaccinated. Many elderly people with those problems have already been safely vaccinated around the world.

To isolate this group of people simply because they are old is wrong. Senior citizens should have the right to congregate safely with others. No one knows how long Covid-19 will remain, but vaccination is the key to achieving herd immunity among young and old.

The elderly should have the right to enjoy life like anyone else. Being elderly is not a communicable disease that requires isolation.
