Last Friday was the deadline for pre-qualifying to build and operate three new zones for retail, wellness and adventure at Ocean Park. I have instead proposed to the park management that they think much more ambitiously and convert the park into a zoo.

A fully fledged zoo would constitute a new type of attraction for domestic, mainland and foreign visitors alike.

Hong Kong has never had a proper zoo fit to compare to, say, the Singapore Zoo. A zoo could be another centre of excellence for the Greater Bay Area, extending Ocean Park’s emphasis on research, conservation and education.

The existing location of a mountainside tumbling into the ocean would make the zoo even more spectacular than, say, Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

The zoo could feature animals associated with Hong Kong, such as snakes, and perhaps pink dolphins, as well as animals from the Chinese zodiac, including Komodo dragons. The centrepiece would, of course, be the pandas.

A night zoo, comparable to Singapore’s, could be a further novel feature.
