Xia Baolong, head of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, has said that the Hong Kong governance team must not only love the country and Hong Kong , but also have the integrity and ability to govern. For this, it is necessary for our governance team to have a wealth of grass-roots work experience and a good understanding of all classes and sectors. Office holders also need to have the sensitivity as well as practical solutions to deep-seated problems, to protect the fundamental interests and rights of Hongkongers, improve livelihoods and promote social progress. There are less than seven weeks left to the Legislative Council elections . It would be good to see the following actions taken to allow the public to better understand our governance team, be it the Election Committee members, potential candidates or government officials. For potential candidates, no matter which group you are running for, please reach out to as many sectors as possible in our community. Frequent contact would let citizens truly feel and realise that the political system is changing and get to know those who may lead Hong Kong. The contact should not be limited to a motivation to win votes. Frequent contact by providing useful information and policy explanation through media channels are two ways to help residents better understand the direction Hong Kong is taking within the nation’s 14th five-year plan and Greater Bay Area development policies. Meanwhile, Election Committee members should set up platforms and seminars in various districts, and hear directly from Hongkongers on their needs and requests. After all, Election Committee members will play a role in nominating all Legco candidates and elect from among themselves 40 suitable Legco candidates. Government officials must also play a part. Legco members must possess acumen and work well in teams, and support our government while challenging proposed policies for the sake of a better Hong Kong. Regardless of which group the potential candidates are from, it would be good to give them a live broadcast platform for dialogue with the directors of various government departments.
