I am writing in about the disruption to MTR service last week, after two doors fell off a train carriage. The rail operator said that a billboard installed along the tracks was dislodged and clipped the doors.

In Hong Kong, the MTR is the most convenient public transport option given its wide network. Often, trains are quite crowded, seats are hard to come by and it is common for passengers to lean on doors. This latest incident shows that this might be risky and that people should avoid leaning on the carriage doors.

Meanwhile, the MTR Corporation should pay more attention to installation work. In February, a ceiling collapsed in Central station. In August, a suspended ceiling fell onto the platform at Diamond Hill station.

These are not the only safety incidents concerning the MTR that have been reported in recent years. In March 2019, two trains collided with each other at Central station during a trial run for a new signalling system, derailing a carriage and injuring a driver. In September that year, three carriages of an East Rail line train derailed, requiring the evacuation of 500 passengers.

If this goes on, passengers will lose trust in the safety and reliability of the MTR.
