Letters | Hong Kong needs long-term thinking to end pandemic and lift morale
- Readers discuss the shortcomings of a haphazard approach to a dynamic situation, and the importance of clear communication with the public at a time of crisis

The basis of this strategy is to achieve a 90 per cent vaccination rate across all age groups. If that is going to be effective, we should be aiming at getting 90 per cent of the population to receive the third dose instead of just the first or second dose. The dosage might need to increase with time.
The virus will continue to mutate. Rather than having a haphazard approach to deal with a dynamic situation, a five-tier virus warning system could be in place, with detailed corresponding measures from compulsory mask wearing and social distancing to having partial lockdown in the most dire situation. Information, measures and guidelines must be disseminated from one central, authorised source to avoid misunderstanding and confusion.
Among other things, citizens will welcome clear guidelines on when an infected person needs to be quarantined in isolated facilities and when quarantined in one’s own home unit is acceptable, as well as the required protocols if the infected person quarantines at home.
