As a migrant who came to Australia from Hong Kong some 60 years ago, and is now sadly witnessing the deteriorating relations between Australia and China, I appreciate the thoughts expressed in the article “Why tiny Solomon Islands fuels Five Eyes’ paranoia” (April 24).
Speaking as an Australian, I am amazed at the hypocrisy and arrogance shown by my country in its reaction to the signing of a security treaty between the Solomon Islands and China. The treaty has been labelled by our prime minister as a “secret deal”. Our leaders have lamented not being consulted on this matter and have scrambled to ask Solomon Islands to reverse its decision.

This is blatant interference in the politics of another nation, something which Australia has often accused others of regarding its own affairs.
We are in effect treating the Solomon Islands as a vassal state.

I doubt if we ever consulted our Asian and Pacific neighbours before inviting the biggest warring nation on earth to establish military bases on our soil and their doorstep. We certainly did not consult them before purchasing nuclear submarines (we did not even consult France, another of our weapons suppliers). Talk about a “secret deal”!
