Now that Russia claims to have taken control of Mariupol, it would serve the interests of the country if Vladimir Putin took this small victory as the opportunity to stop fighting and preserve the country’s military competence, economy and incumbent leader.
Drones and GPS may yet be a game changer for Ukraine. Ukraine has been using Turkish Bayraktar drones, as well as commercially bought drones, to drop ammunition on Russian targets. The US has also been providing Ukraine with GPS signals from its satellites, which are important for the use of unpiloted aircraft. With many of Russia’s troops currently deployed in Ukraine, leaving security weakened at home, Russia needs to be wary of a surprise attack by another country.
If Putin wants to counterbalance US hegemony and Nato expansion, it would be better for Russia to foster closer cooperation with China and build alliances with non-Nato countries. Here, the Russian leader can learn from President Xi Jinping’s launching of the Belt and Road Initiative to expand China’s economic influence abroad and establish diplomatic ties with allies.
