Letters | By allowing home quarantine, Hong Kong could offer China a Covid exit strategy
- Readers discuss how Hong Kong can take on infection risks for the whole country, the focus of the city’s commerce minister, and the ecological value of Fanling golf course

Executive Council convenor Bernard Chan recently said that Hong Kong should reopen the border with the rest of China, because “Hong Kong’s future is always about our connectivity to China”. With respect, Hong Kong should think less about what it needs from China, and more about what it can do for China.
Hong Kong government ministers took the lead in allowing themselves home quarantine, reflecting our 90 per cent vaccination levels and quick responses to small spikes in local cases. If that concession were extended to all travellers, or all residents at least, China would be able to see the results.
Indeed, the infection risks Hongkongers would accept on behalf of the whole country could lead to benefits for all. It might also encourage higher vaccination levels in the rest of China, as a social duty owed by all to all, offering an exit strategy from Covid-19 controls.
