At the recent Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong, Vice-Premier Han Zheng called on the city to accelerate its development in several areas, including by strengthening its professional services to better contribute to the Belt and Road Initiative, in the fields of law, shipping, finance and counselling.

As Hong Kong integrates itself into mainland policies, the city’s future development blueprint will be shaped by the belt and road, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the Greater Bay Area and the Northern Metropolis.

The Northern Metropolis is a major push to open up Hong Kong through more in-depth collaboration with neighbouring Shenzhen, while creating employment opportunities and a Hong Kong-style Silicon Valley and resolving Hong Kong’s severe shortage of housing.

Hong Kong should at the same time work on better integration with other Greater Bay Area cities. From logistics to transport, from professional services to trade facilities, the Greater Bay Area is a much bigger platform on which Hong Kong can rely in dealing with its international counterparts.

Through the RCEP, industries in participating countries enjoy a freer and friendlier trade environment. This is particularly helpful for small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to grow their businesses abroad. More than 70 countries are participating in the Belt and Road Initiative and it is important that Hong Kong provides a good springboard for links between these countries and the mainland.
