Letters | Fare increase won’t save Hong Kong’s Star Ferry from sailing into history
Readers discuss the Star Ferry’s proposal to double fares, the need for taxi service quality to rise with rates, and Octopus cards for seniors

The 124-year-old Star Ferry is part of Hongkongers’ collective memory because it represents the spirit of the city. While the ferry operator is facing financial difficulties, it is unclear whether raising the fares steeply will help, particularly at a time when Hongkongers are struggling with inflation in general and the pandemic has affected livelihoods.
The Star Ferry’s key problem is that it is losing its attraction for Hongkongers as a mode of transport. The company and the government must find ways to diversify its revenue, perhaps holding special events to attract tourists and locals alike. The government needs to do more to develop the Star Ferry as a tourist attraction.
We must do all we can to prevent the Star Ferry from sailing into history.
