Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore fulfilled his destiny in 2004. Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia fulfilled his, around 18 years later, in 2022.

On Monday, Anwar made his first official visit to Singapore. Both prime ministers quickly pledged to deepen cooperation and build on a “long-standing and immutable” friendship.
As noted in your report, “Malaysia hails close ties with Singapore as deals struck over green, digital economy” (January 30), ties between the two countries have been “consistent” in that both sides have sought to deepen relations but recurrent issues have cropped up, including the reviewing of a 2008 International Court of Justice ruling that Singapore has sovereignty over Pedra Branca.

It is heartening that the Anwar government has said it respects the ruling. However, Anwar has urged Singapore to examine the reclamations carried out in the Pedra Branca area to ensure they are not affecting the environment and the borders with Malaysia.
