US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently postponed what would have been his first visit to China since he took office. Kevin McCarthy, speaker of the US House of Representatives, may visit Taiwan this spring, which may complicate US-China relations in the coming months.
In recent years, some Americans have come to believe that the US has got the short end of the stick when engaging with China. However, cooperation between the US and China benefits both sides.
Blinken’s visit to China could have been the start of a bilateral conversation that paved the way to more effective US-China relations.
Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies has been significantly affected by US-China tensions over the past few years. The company has been subject to US sanctions since 2019, and has been actively exploring new growth opportunities in businesses other than mobile phones.
The Post reported in January that Huawei had worked with Tianjin Port Group to build a smart terminal. If both China and the US are prepared to improve relations, they may consider working on port digitalisation using Huawei solutions as a first step. This will serve US interests in two ways.
