With regard to whether the finance minister ought to include another cash handout in the budget, lots has been said about whether this would help in boosting the economy. However, I think the handout should be considered as appreciation of the cooperation of Hongkongers in the fight against Covid-19, particularly their expenditure on masks, disinfectants, test kits and other items for prevention of the spread of the virus.

Assuming the cost of a face mask at HK$5, expenditure for this item alone amounts to HK$5,475 for three years. I hope the financial secretary will consider another handout to compensate all eligible Hongkongers for the costs they incurred during the pandemic in addition to it being a token of appreciation.
