As an educator and resident of Hong Kong, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing our city, particularly in the areas of education and the economy. Hong Kong is currently facing a declining population, a shortage of teachers and demographic changes, all of which are having a significant impact on the city’s economy and education.

However, there are concrete strategies we can adopt to address these problems and help Hong Kong achieve a brighter future.

One solution to the teacher shortage in Hong Kong is to provide financial incentives such as higher salaries or bonuses to attract and retain teachers. Investing in teacher training and development is also a viable way to improve the quality of education in the city.

Another challenge facing Hong Kong is population decline, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of students and teachers. To address this issue, we can learn from the past and invest more in improving the economy and education. In the book World Class: How to Build a 21st-Century School System, Andreas Schleicher makes the case for investing in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education to prepare students for the future job market.

The government can also implement policies to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation and provide support for small businesses to grow, as outlined in the 2022 policy address. These measures can create more job opportunities and keep people in Hong Kong.

Michael Fullan’s work on integrating technology, pedagogy and changing knowledge can also help improve the quality of education in Hong Kong. Additionally, Fullan’s The New Meaning of Educational Change highlights the importance of creating a more student-centered approach to education, which can improve the quality of education in Hong Kong.
