The month of March has seen a string of road accidents involving taxis, trucks and buses.
If anything, it should direct our attention to how our road users need to be kept on a tighter rein. Looking into the underlying causes of these accidents would go a long way towards preventing future instances.
I was recently on buses where drivers seemed to be going at top speed, with passengers and their belongings being flung about. Many of these drivers appeared to be elderly. Bus companies should make a point of frequently reminding drivers about road safety and implementing speed limits.
There’s a need for all road users to exercise patience.

Why take easy taxi driving jobs from lonely retirees?
I refer to the letter, “From the US president to Hong Kong taxi drivers, age must not be allowed to risk lives” (March 16).
Your correspondent doesn’t seem to understand there aren’t many easy jobs for the elderly. Taxi driving involves sitting, not unlike a desk job in an air-conditioned office. Short of a ban, elderly drivers won’t stop doing such light, well-paid work.
Moreover, the social nature of this work allows them to connect with the public, and their peers over lunch and dinner. For retirees, it keeps loneliness away.
Still, older Hongkongers could also consider applying to be a tram driver. An undemanding job at a slow speed could be much easier to handle than a fast car in a busy city.
