It is quite obvious Rahul Gandhi’s two-year sentence in the Indian court for criminal defamation spells the end of the opposition Congress party (“Will Rahul Gandhi’s prison sentence deal ‘death blow’ to India’s opposition Congress party?”, April 9).
However, the leader of the Congress party will become a political martyr by possibly exposing a legal flaw, which could be manipulated by powerful people who turn a simple civil case into a criminal case to meet their political objectives. While a civil case could result in the court ordering the payment of monetary compensation, a criminal case could result in a jail sentence.

Gandhi was accused of maligning those with the surname Modi in a 2019 election campaign speech, although he specifically referred to two fugitives – a cricket executive and a diamond tycoon – and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. None of those three people have bothered to take any action against Gandhi in this regard, though.
