French President Emmanuel Macron has been sharply criticised in the West for his comments on Europe’s position on Taiwan after his state visit to China. Macron cautioned against being drawn into a crisis over Taiwan driven by “the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction”. Former United States president Donald Trump has cricitised Macron for pandering to China.
Despite this, Macron has demonstrated his determination and the courage to defend a liberal world order, where global cooperation is the antidote to the world’s pressing problems.
Unfortunately, the hostile attitude towards China and its Western “sympathisers” has been spurred by the anti-China rhetoric among US presidential hopefuls. With more powerful weapons of mass destruction, more severe global challenges and a multipolar world, we are already living in one of the most dangerous periods of human history.
How would aggravating and isolating one of the most powerful and populous countries help make our world a safer, better and more prosperous place to live?
Beijing’s intention to liberate Taiwan is not something new. Moreover, how can Beijing keep calm and not “overreact” when advanced US battleships have been sailing through the Taiwan Strait and the US army surrounds China with its military bases in the neighbourhood?
